Camp Alpha Omega for Girls – Exploring Earth

Girls entering 3rd – 6th grades

Location: Longway Planetarium (with a walking field trip to Mott Community College)
Join Longway Planetarium as we partner with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Explore Earth as guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society pull out some of their favorite activities! Make some mineral jewelry to wear. Investigate fossils and learn what they can tell us about prehistory. Walk to Mott Community College to meet the Dean of Math and Science and tour MCC’s science facilities. The Sky’s the Limit! – The sun, moon, and stars. Planes, balloons, and kites. Explore the daytime and nighttime sky. Make a cloud in a bottle, move air while blowing a balloon through an obstacle course. Make a constellation finder and a glow in the dark moon phase book.
Solids, Liquids, and Gases – Discover the properties of matter! Change materials from solids to liquids and from liquids to gas. Can you change them back again? Use digital scales, beakers, sieves and filter paper to make and separate mixtures.
The Dinosaurs are Coming! – Sloan Museum’s Dinosaurs will be back soon. Get ready with some prehistoric science fun! Make a fossil shark tooth necklace to wear. Make a fossil cast to take home. Visit the dig pit in the garden and take home some fossil and mineral samples to add to your collection.
The Build-it Challenge – Can you build a tower from straws that can support weight? Can you build a ramp that sends a ball the farthest? Can you choose the best materials for making bricks? Pre-registration is required.

Science fun for little ones! Held in the Planetarium’s Family Science Room, this camp will provide opportunities for free exploration and independent play time as well as structured hands-on science and math activities. Investigate color mixing, while making a piece of art to take home. Pick some flowers and leaves in the Planetarium garden. Get up close and personal with bugs and worms. Level 2 Science Camp

Wild Weather – Learn about Michigan’s only recorded F5 tornado that devastated a local neighborhood in the 1950s. Make a cloud in a bottle, use a tornado tube, and investigate what makes wild weather happen.
Prehistoric Predators – Explore the some of the fiercest predators the world has seen. Examine model skulls of a Saber Tooth cat and a Velociraptor. Learn about the physical adaptations that helped these hunters survive and their prey animals escape.
Rockets and Race Cars – Build a balloon powered racer. Launch in-room rockets and build a model rocket to launch and take home.
Energy – Explore electricity, heat, light, sound, and magnetic energy with several fast-paced, hands-on activities. Use a battery and motor to build a marker robot. Make a plan for melting a piece of chocolate, use mirrors to direct a ray of light, make an obnoxious noise maker and build an electromagnet. Pre-registration is required.

SCRATCH Camp

Learn to use MIT’s Scratch computer programming language and have a blast creating animated games and multimedia stories, while building math and technology skills. Students are strongly encouraged to bring original stories, art, and game ideas to the camp.

Day 2: Stories with single backgrounds, dialogues, and character animations.

Build series and parallel circuits, an on-off switch and an electromagnet. Then use a battery, motor, and a hot glue stick propeller to build a marker robot that draws. Advanced Rocketry (2 Day Program!)

Build and fly your own model rockets! On Day 1, we will earn what makes a successful model rocket and construct “Alpha” and “Viking” rockets. On Day 2, we will launch our rockets; first with a smaller “test” engine, and if everything checks out, a second launch with a more powerful engine. No prior model rocket building experience needed.
